The World Games in Kaohsiung

Our dream came true!

Hosting an international multi-sport event is the height of achievement for any country. When the members of the Sports Affairs Council (SAC) of the Executive Yuan, Taiwan¡¦s Cabinet, invited the President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), Mr. Ron Froehlich, to visit the island in July 2002, they were thinking out how they could turn this dream into reality. Mr. Froehlich visited Taiwan in 2002 to explore the possibility of having Kaohsiung host The World Games.

Following his visit, the SAC processed the evaluations and set out to prepare a preliminary bid to host The World Games 2009 in Taiwan. Considering the caliber of the event a good match for Kaohsiung, a burgeoning metropolis in rapid infrastructural development, the SAC appointed Kaohsiung to apply. The mayor at that time, Mayor Frank Hsieh, presented the city¡¦s potential as a World Games host city to the SAC members.

In May 2003, Mayor Hsieh and SAC¡¦s Mr. Lin formally notified the IWGA of Kaohsiung¡¦s intention to host The World Games 2009. Only one month later, all 19 SAC members met with Kaohsiung representatives to develop work plans and initial strategies. Another meeting was held in Kaohsiung shortly thereafter. In July 2003, one year after President Froehlich's initial visit, the Executive Yuan ratified the SACs actions. Kaohsiung would represent Chinese Taipei in the bid to host The World Games in 2009!

The IWGA acknowledged and approved the bid--Kaohsiung became one of the candidate cities to host The World Games 2009. An official Kaohsiung delegation flew to Europe to give the IWGA Executive Committee additional information for the bid file. The delegation consisted of Kaohsiung City Government¡¦s Mr. Tsai, the Kaohsiung City Education Bureau¡¦s Mr. Tseng, the Sports Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan¡¦s Mrs. Hsu, Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee¡¦s Mr. C.K. Wu and Mrs. Hsu and National Sun Yat-sen University¡¦s Dr. Chen. In a whirlwind ten-day visit to Rotterdam, Zurich, Milan and Barcelona, they communicated Kaohsiung¡¦s energy and enthusiasm about hosting The World Games to the IWGA Executive Committee.

The trip was successful. As a result, IWGA President Ron Froehlich and IWGA Secretary General Co Koren announced that they would come to Kaohsiung for site inspections and meetings. Reports, promotional materials, marketing videos and presentations of the new stadium and other planned construction projects were made. The comments and suggestions the six-member Kaohsiung delegation had gathered in Europe were instrumental in getting everything just right.
In December 2003, President Froehlich and Secretary General Koren arrived in Kaohsiung. They were taken to the potential venues, including the site of the future Kaohsiung Main Stadium. ¡§The dedication of Kaohsiung City is evident to everyone,¡¨ they remarked. Their statement was later repeated by International Ju-jitsu Federation president and IWGA Executive Committee member Rinaldo Orlandi. During his visit to Kaohsiung in March 2004, Orlandi commented that Kaohsiung had made a deep impression on him.
On June 14, 2004, the IWGA officially named Kaohsiung City as host to The World Games 2009. Mayor Frank Hsieh and IWGA President Ron Froehlich signed the Host City Contract to have port city Kaoshiung host the eighth World Games. A few months later, IWGA President Froehlich visited Kaohsuing to join the citizens of Kaohsiung in their celebrations over winning the bid race. During the festivities another decisive step towards successful World Games in 2009 was taken: the Kaohsiung World Games Organizing Committee was constituted.

When the preparatory work for The 8th World Games 2009 Kaohsiung began, The 7th World Games were about to conclude in Duisburg, Germany. In July 2005, during the Closing Ceremony, which a large Kaohsiung delegation attended, the Duisburg organizers handed the IWGA flag back to President Froehlich. Then, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai stepped forward to receive the flag on behalf of Kaohsiung from President Froehlich. The handover not only symbolized the closing of The World Games 2005, it told the athletes and officials there and the world that the next World Games would take place in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei.
